THE MASKS OF MAJULI
These faces come from Majuli, the river island of Assam, where the tradition of mask-making has long been intertwined with the Sattras and the theatrical traditions of Ankiya Nat and Bhaona. Masks were created not simply as decorative objects, but to transform performers into characters from stories, mythology and the imagination.
Made by hand, they carry the wonderful irregularities of the human hand. Their forms are expressive, exaggerated and unapologetically theatrical.
Each one handcrafted and hand-painted in Majuli, Assam. No two are quite alike.
For me, these are not objects that need to sit quietly on a wall. They are pieces of living craft, full of colour, humour and character, carrying forward a tradition that has been passed from one generation of makers to another. A stunning handcrafted mask made from  bamboo, clay and cloth. It has been painted meticulously by a master artist from India.
